I’m Ryan Thompson-Bamsey, a writer, journalist and novelist based in the UK. I write about video games professionally, fiction obsessively, and most other things whenever they refuse to leave me alone.
My work ranges from reviews, criticism and features to personal essays, research-led psychology writing, cultural commentary and the occasional side project that gets out of hand. This site is a home for all of it: the serious work, the personal work, and the things I made simply because they seemed fun.
I’m an Editor at TheGamer, where I’ve worked across reviews, features, guides, opinion, editing, and editorial leadership. My published work has covered everything from major RPG releases to accessibility, queer representation, player psychology, and the strange little arguments that games inspire.
I hold a BSc and MSc in Clinical Psychology, which occasionally escapes containment and finds its way into my writing—particularly when games intersect with behaviour, cognition, or applicable research.
I also write fiction. My current project, A Dangerous Kindness, is my debut novel set in a fantasy world. It’s about abuse, assassination, intimacy, and the complicated business of learning what kindness looks like when you’ve spent your life expecting it to hurt. Beyond that, I write essays, experiment with serial projects and Let’s Plays, and occasionally follow an idea much further than any reasonable person would.
